Featuring Lost Boy and Myra Collins
Workout for the beginning of Juvenile career
Myra grabbed the racing saddle from the tack room and walked down the aisle where Pan was standing in the cross-ties. The colt seemed to have a healthy shine around him, and just being groomed, seemed pure white. Myra placed the saddle gently on Pan's back and started to tighten up the saddle. She waited for Pan to let his breath out, then tightened the girth again. Myra made another trip to the tack room to grab his mask, bridle, and leg wraps. She set down the colt's other equipment on a bench, but kept the bridle. Myra walked over to Pan's head and he immediately dropped his head. "Good boy, " Myra said with a smile as she slipped the bridle over Pan's ears. She grabbed the mask and secured it on the top part of his face, then wrapped his two front legs. Myra unhooked him from the cross-ties and led him outside, where Lost Boy's trainer, Xaria Spall, waited. "Ready to go?" She said, standing up. Myra smiled again. "Absolutely."
"Ok. I just want you to breeze him. Maybe some other exercises. I don't want to work him to hard with his maiden race coming. So, get on the track and show me what he can do." Xaria said.
"Aye, aye, captain!" Myra said jokingly as she mounted onto Pan, settling into the saddle lightly. She gathered the reins as Xaria grabbed the left side of Lost Boy's bridle. Xaria started to lead Pan into the starting gate. Myra could feel him freezing up and started to pat his neck. "You're okay boy. It's fine. You've done this before." Pan's ears swiveled back and forth as he let Xaria lead him into the gate. He stood still and Myra waited for the back gates to close. Once she heard the gates close, she mentally counted down the seconds. Ring! The metal doors swung open and Pan exploded onto the track, not hesitating a bit. Myra remembered Xaria's instructions and pulled him in. "Not yet boy," she whispered in Pan's ears. He kept a steady pace throughout the breeze, constantly fighting Myra's commands. When they reached the final stretch, Myra let him go. The white colt instantly lengthened his stride, his long legs covering the ground insanely fast. In a few seconds that felt like eternity, they passed the wire. Myra fought for control yet again, but managed to reel him in.
Myra steered him toward the starting gates, where Xaria stood watching. Myra let him trot over to the gates, thinking he'll burn off his excess energy. "He's not even breathing hard." Myra said when they reached Xaria. Myra dismounted then held Pan's reins. "Were we good?" She asked, patting Lost Boy's neck.
"Good? You guys were great!" Xaria said with a big smile on her face. "Come on, let's get him cleaned up."
"Do you mind if I untack him today? Myra said as they clipped Pan back into the cross-ties. "Sure. Make sure to give him a peppermint when you're done." Xaria said.
"Of course." Myra replied, already taking off Pan's saddle. "Alright then. I'll leave you two to your own devices then." Xaria said with a chuckle, then walked down the barn aisle to work in her office. By the time Xaria was gone, Myra had taken off Pan's saddle and mask. She put the tack on a bench while she took off Pan's leg wraps. Myra gathered the equipment and walked to the tack room. She came back to Pan, who almost instantly lowered his head again. "You are such a good boy." Myra said as the bridle came off Pan's head. After another quick trip to the tackroom, Myra got Pan's halter, lead rope and grooming tools and then returned. She did a quick groom and checked him over for any swelling or injuries. Myra put on Pan's halter and then unhooked the cross-ties. Myra picked up the lead rope and started to lead him toward his stall. When they arrived, Myra opened the stall door and turned him in, then unclipped his lead rope. "You were a very good boy today." Myra said as she fed him two peppermints. "Keep up the work, my champion."
